Course Description
In this two-month course, prospective teachers of learners who are deaf or hard-of-hearing will learn about various strategies for developing literacy, reading and writing.  They will examine in depth the Workshop Model and how it is integrated into all classrooms, not just those for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children.  Students will become familiar with ways to determine the reading level of students who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing and how to build on the student's skills to improve making meaning of text. Students will link State Standards to the development of lesson plans for all parts of the literacy block.  They will practice editing written pieces done by Deaf students and how to then plan learning experiences based on the student work.  They will also develop a plan for addressing all aspects of two languages, English and American Sign Language, as part of the literacy block.
