About the President Dr. Mark Milliron

Mark D. Milliron was appointed the sixth president of National University on October 1, 2022. President Milliron is an award-winning leader, teacher, author, speaker, and consultant who has served across the K-12, higher education, philanthropy, corporate, and nonprofit spectrum over the last three decades. He is passionate about championing academic innovation as well as advancing student outcomes and ensuring student academic, personal, and professional success.

President Milliron is the former Senior Vice President of Western Governors University and former Executive Dean of its School of Education. While at WGU, he was instrumental in supporting the launch of WGU Indiana and WGU Washington, and led academic and operational strategies for the largest school of education in the country. He also served on the Board of Trustees and was the Chair of the Academic Policy Committee (2003-09). He later served as the Founding Chancellor of WGU Texas in 2011.

In previous roles, Milliron co-founded the student-success advanced-analytics innovator Civitas Learning, served as Deputy Director for Postsecondary Success with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and led as President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College. He has been recognized as a Distinguished Graduate by the University of Texas at Austin and inducted into the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) Hall of Fame.

President Milliron currently serves as Board Chair of the Trellis Foundation, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for Bennett College, and holds an appointment as a Professor of Practice in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin.

President Milliron was born in Seattle, one of nine siblings, and the first of the nine to graduate college. He attended Arizona State University where he received his B.S. in organizational communication and M.A. in organizational communication. He went on to pursue his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin and earned a Ph.D. in educational administration. He is an avid sportsman, especially in basketball, football, tennis, and martial arts. He also enjoys reading nonfiction books including philosophy and religion.

President Mark Milliron is happily married to his wife of 26 years, Julia, and is a proud father to four beautiful children Alexandra, Richard, Marcus, and Max.
