Course Description
This is the second course in a two course sequence that examines the acquisition of American Sign Language and English by deaf and hard of hearing individuals. The first course focused on infants and young children. This course will focus on the communication development of older children, youth and late-deafened school age individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. DHH 601 provides a foundation for this course and must be taken first in the sequence. Students will apply a bilingual ASL-English framework to the challenge of developing comprehensible cognitive academic language proficiency in a visually accessible environment. All aspects of both languages will be considered, so that students are able to identify and develop the communicative strengths and academic potential of all types of deaf and hard of hearing learners.
