What is the 1098-T form?
The 1098-T form is a tax form required by the IRS for Higher Education Institutions to send to all active students. The form pertains to the Hope Scholarship and Lifetime Learning Credits-Tax Relief Act of 1997.

What if I didn't receive my 1098-T form?
Please e-mail a new form request to email@example.com or call (866) 628-8988. Make sure to include your 9-digit student identification number, current address and phone number. We will make every attempt to respond to your request within 1 business day.
What do the amounts is box 1 mean?
Box 1 represents the amount of tuition paid during the calendar year less any refund. Box 1 may not reflect the true amount of tuition to be claimed for tax purposes; it reflects the amounts that we are required to report. For clarification on amounts to be claimed for tax purposes please refer students to a tax professional. To verify the information regarding the amount of tuition paid and any refunds processed, please access your student account record. You may view your account information through the SOAR Student Portal at www.nu.edu\login.html. Click on SOAR Student Portal link. The next page will ask for your 9-digit student identification number and password. If you have forgotten or do not know your password please contact Student Concierge Services at firstname.lastname@example.org or (866) 628-8988. Once logged in select the Finances link, then the Customer Account link.
What do the amounts in box 4 mean?
Box 4 represents current year adjustments to tuition that was reported in Box 1 in the prior year(s).
What do the amounts in box 5 mean?
Box 5 represents the amount of scholarships or grants applied to tuition for the current year.
What do the amounts in box 6 mean?
Box 6 represents current year adjustments to scholarships or grants that were reported in Box 5 in the prior year(s).
What does the Service Provider/Account # represent?
This is the 9-digit student identification number.
What if I paid prior year tuition in the current year?
Example: Student paid November 2006 tuition charges in January 2007.
This payment will be reported on the 2007 1098-T.
What if I paid current year tuition in the previous year?
Example: Student paid January 2007 tuition charges in December 2006.
This payment is reflected in Box 1 of the 2006 1098-T.
Does the IRS offer any pamphlets or information regarding the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997?
Yes. You may contact the IRS directly at 1-800-TAX-FORM or 1-800-829-1040. You can visit them on the web at http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/. They provide Publication #970 entitled "Tax Benefits for Higher Education".
