Course Description: This course distinguishes the fundamental practices of sound management functions to the understanding of effective leadership. Organizations need both leadership and management understanding to function effectively in creating the learning organization. Students will learn to analyze and create plans for strategic management, and apply leadership concepts and approaches.
Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Utilize leadership theories, concepts, and approaches to make participative decisions, integrate the components of creating a learning organization, and evaluate organizational structures and culture as supportive of organization direction and strategy.
  • Analyze the relationships between leadership theory, management methods, and how these impact upon individual and organizational effectiveness. Define how successful companies utilize Paradoxical Thinking to achieve a competitive advantage.
  • Analyze problems regarding cross functional team building, creating authority, accountability, managing conflict, setting goals, and measuring performance and quality.
  • Managing projects, designing work and managing across functions.
  • Develop and communicate vision, evaluate organizational structures and culture as supportive of organization direction and strategy.
  • Learn how think paradoxically and utilize paradoxical thinking.

    • Communication and Presentation – Demonstrate effective written communication and oral presentation skills in a collaborative, problem-solving setting.
    • Critical Thinking - Examine information, ideas, belief, problems or arguments through an intellectual process that judges relevance, clarity, accuracy, and importance.
    • Diversity and Ethics – Assess and manage ethical issues and multicultural diversity.
    • Globalization and Cultural Awareness – Assess the risk and opportunities associated with operating within multi-cultural, global business environment.
    • Leadership and Governance - Formulate the appropriate business policies and strategies within an environment of change to meet the objectives of the organization’s stakeholders.
    • Problem Solving - Apply the basic theories of leadership, economics, and business statistics to solving business problems and taking advantage of business opportunities
    • Subject Knowledge - Synthesize information from functional areas within an organization, such as operations, finance, accounting, management, and marketing, as they support decision-making processes throughout an organization.
    • Technology - Utilize current methodologies, systems and technology in order to plan, execute and implement the strategies needed for effective management.
