|Course Description: Overview of the major segments of the hospitality industry. The structure and the operations of the industry are discussed in addition to career possibilities, industry trends to include lodging, gaming, food and beverage, and travel and tourism operations.
|Course Learning Outcomes:
- Define the hospitality and tourism industry.
- Explain the principal factors influencing growth of the industry.
- Identify key trends driving change in employment opportunities in the hospitality industry.
- Explain how hospitality service companies are responding to changes in the labor force.
- Compare and contrast lodging, food service, travel, tourism, attractions, recreation, and gaming establishments.
- Describe the importance of
guest service and the hospitality spirit.
- Synthesize the use of on-line resources to research and prepare written and oral assignments.

MAJOR IN HOSPITALITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Communicate professionally and effectively with various levels of organizational leadership, customers, and team members in a variety of formats to include oral, visual, and written.
- Identify current hospitality management guest service concepts recognized as industry standards.
- Identify the human aspects of the quality service in the hospitality industry to include key concepts of cultural awareness and ethics in today's organizations.

Writing Across the Curriculum:
Students are expected to demonstrate writing skills in describing, analyzing and evaluating ideas and experiences. Plagiarism is the presentation of someone else's ideas or work as one's own. Students must give credit for any information that is not either the result of original research or common knowledge. If a student borrows ideas or information from another author, he/she must acknowledge the author in the body of the text and on the reference page. Ethical behavior in the classroom is required of every student. The course will identify ethical policies and practices relevant to course topics.
Students are expected to be competent in using current technology appropriate for this discipline. Such technology may include word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Use of the internet and e-mail may also be required.
Learning to work with and value diversity is essential in every class. Students are expected to exhibit an appreciation for multinational and gender diversity in the classroom.
