Commercial Financial Policies & Practices

Course Description

This course is an examination of the financial policies and practices of commercial banks, savings and loan associations, pension funds, insurance companies, and other major financial management institutions. It discusses sources and uses of funds, their cost and return, and government regulation of the financial sector.

Learning Outcomes

  • Research, propose and implement a method to seek funding from at least four of the following types of financial institutions: Federal Reserve, Commercial banks, Saving & Loan Institutions, Commercial Thrift Institutions, Credit Union, Pension Funds, Venture Capital Companies, and Life Insurance Companies.
  • Compare and contrast the items that are most important to the institutions in deciding whether or not to provide funding. These items should be broken down, initially, into at least 5 categories, and will be discussed so the student can be shown how to measure them. The categories are as follows: Debt/equity balance sheet structure (leverage), profitability, technological potential, stability of recipient (historically), and overall contribution to the economy.
