National University opens The Nest, a new co-learning hub at its San Diego campus designed to support working adults, military students, and parents pursuing higher education. While NU primarily serves students online, the university’s newly remodeled physical space offers flexible support for learners balancing education with careers, caregiving, and service commitments.
The Nest provides academic coaching, collaborative workspaces, and career development workshops, along with mentorship programs and access to affordable or free child care through a partnership with the YMCA. The on-site Sanford Harmony Family Clubhouse hosts parenting resources and family events, while the redesigned Veterans and Military Community Center delivers federally funded services that help military-connected learners transition into civilian careers in fields like cybersecurity, IT, and K–12 education.
“The typical student today is an ANDer™, a learner balancing education and work, parenting, deployment, or caregiving,” says Dr. Mark D. Milliron, president and CEO of National University. “This is about providing the kind of wraparound support that helps them not just persist, but thrive.” NU serves more than 50,000 degree-seeking students and 80,000 workforce learners annually, 80% of whom study fully online. A second Nest location is scheduled to open later this year at the YMCA Escondido campus, with more planned in communities that have large NU student populations.
