In a feature from University Business, National University President Dr. Mark D. Milliron shared how The Nest, NU’s new co-learning hub in San Diego, is transforming the online student experience. Developed in partnership with the YMCA, The Nest offers working adult and parent learners flexible workspace, child care access, and wraparound support services. The innovative space combines academic and career coaching, mentorship, and hands-on learning tools such as drone coding and 3-D printing to help students thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
“Our students didn’t want to come to a class, they wanted to come to learning,” said Dr. Milliron. “We wanted to create a ‘third place,’ a home away from home for our students.” Designed with the realities of adult learners in mind, the co-learning model gives National University’s predominantly online student population, 80% of whom study fully online, a physical space for focus, collaboration, and connection. With additional hubs planned in Escondido and through partnerships with local colleges, The Nest represents the next evolution in inclusive, flexible higher education.
