National University President Highlights 54-Year Legacy of Serving Military and Working Adult Learners
During a recent media appearance on ESPN LA’s Travis & D’Marco show, National University President Dr. Mark Milliron shared the story behind NU’s 54-year mission to serve nontraditional students, those balancing education with work, family, or military service. Founded by a Navy captain and Ph.D., the university was created to give service members and adult learners access to flexible, high-quality education that fits their lives. Today, National University serves more than 50,000 students annually, offering online, hybrid, and even metaverse-based learning models designed to meet students wherever they are.
Dr. Milliron explained that approximately 50% of NU’s undergraduate population consists of active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses or dependents. NU’s student body reflects a wide range of life stages, with undergraduate students averaging 33 years old, master’s students averaging 37, and doctoral students averaging 42. “We meet students where they are and help them finish strong,” said Dr. Milliron. The university’s flexible programs continue to empower ANDers, students who are parents and professionals, service members and scholars, to pursue their education without compromise.
