National University earns approval from the U.S. Department of Labor to sponsor a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) for aspiring K-12 teachers, announced on National Apprenticeship Day. The initiative allows future educators to complete structured coursework while earning wages through on-the-job training with partnering school districts. Designed to remove financial and logistical barriers to teaching careers, the program addresses California’s urgent teacher shortages, particularly in special education, math, and science.
“This program connects coursework with real-world experience, giving future teachers the tools they need to thrive,” says Dr. Mark D. Milliron, president and CEO of National University. Supported by the university’s Sanford College of Education, the largest provider of teaching credentials in California, the apprenticeship pathway reflects NU’s commitment to serving working adults and military learners through credential-rich, career-aligned education.
