National University Teaches San Diego Students About Military Child Experience

In recognition of the Month of the Military Child, National University representatives visit several San Diego County schools, including Loma Verde Elementary in Chula Vista, to help students better understand the unique challenges faced by their military-connected classmates. The classroom lessons, led by Meg O’Grady, senior vice president of military and government programs at National University, are part of a nationwide curriculum created by Harmony Academy at NU to build empathy and connection between military and non-military students.

Through interactive activities and discussions, students learn that “kids serve, too” when their parents are in the military. The program also teaches values of safety, friendship, and community support, while introducing students to symbols of service such as military medals. “These lessons help children feel seen and understood while encouraging their peers to show kindness and support,” says O’Grady.
