National University Cybersecurity Expert Warns New Graduates About Rising Job Scams

With job scams on the rise, new college graduates entering the workforce are increasingly being targeted by fraudsters posing as recruiters or employers. In a recent Good Morning Cleveland interview, Chris Simpson, director of cybersecurity programs at National University, warned that fake job listings and phishing schemes are becoming more sophisticated, costing Americans more than $500 million in reported losses since 2020, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Simpson explained that scammers often impersonate trusted sources such as university career offices or legitimate companies to trick job seekers into revealing personal information or sending money for “equipment” or “onboarding costs.” He advised graduates to verify company details directly through official websites, carefully inspect email domains, and consult their college career services for help identifying real opportunities. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Simpson said. “A little research can go a long way in protecting yourself.”
