Cinematography II
Course Description
Extends the principles studied in Cinematography I to techniques used to establish the emotional feel and look of a film based on a preproduction plan that satisfies directional intentions for a fictional narrative. Includes controlling and manipulating light, applying compositional principles, camera movement, and advanced concepts of lens selection.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify the types and appropriate uses of grip equipment and lighting instruments used in a professional film production
- Explain the use of lighting instruments in the control of light intensity, direction, quality, shape and color
- Illustrate three-point lighting in the placement of lighting instruments to control intensity, direction, quality, shape and color appropriate to a narrative scene
- Illustrate tonal variation and separation in lighting of a subject and foreground and background elements
- Illustrate tonal variation and separation in lighting of a subject and foreground and background elements
- Prepare a camera and lighting diagram for a narrative scene
- Illustrate the use of lighting to establish a mood, emotional tone and dramatic intention
- Operate a digital still and video camera using manual controls to render images with proper exposure, depth of field and color in a variety of settings and conditions using lighting instruments to supplement natural lighting
- Operate a digital still and video camera to capture images with proper framing, composition, and shot size in a variety of settings and conditions where lighting instruments are used to supplement natural lighting and control light intensity, direction, quality, shape and color but is not apparentbr /amp;nbsp;
Requirements
Students need access to a prosumer digital still and/or video camera with variable zoom and/or prime lenses and tripod, a 3-point lighting package and assorted grip equipment. See the FLM Cinematography and Production Resource guide.andlt;br /andgt;
