Seminar in a Period/Movement I

Course Description

Advanced research in the current scholarly literature on a period or movement in history. Variable topic chosen by the instructor. Possible topics: Renaissance, antebellum U.S., Age of Empires, Nazi Germany, civil rights, labor, environmental or national liberation movements. (May not duplicate content of HIS 645A, HIS 645B or HIS 649A).

Learning Outcomes

  • Distinguish the major themes and issues with regard to a historical period or movements as presented and debated in the scholarly literature.
  • Analyze the specific characteristics of, and similarities and differences between, works of major historians who write on the historical period or movement.
  • Differentiate the theoretical and empirical approaches these historians employ.
  • Evaluate the theoretical and empirical approaches these historians take.
  • Conduct specialized research on a period or movement in history.
  • Compose a professional exposition of that research that incorporates the student’s own critical approach to the topic.
