2004-08-25 National University To Offer Spanish MBA Program Online

San Diego, Calif. – National University, one of California's largest private non-profit universities, will offer its online Executive Master of Business Administration degree program in Spanish, beginning this coming summer.

"By translating all of our coursework to Spanish we will serve an enormous yet underserved market, both domestically and internationally," said Dr. Thomas Green, interim dean of National University's School of Business and Information Management. He added that a large volume of business opportunities and business transactions are emerging in California and Latin America that demand a well-educated, Spanish speaking workforce to provide leadership in international business relations and global trade.

A leader in online education with 10 years of experience in Web-based learning and one of the largest electronic libraries in higher education, National University currently offers 26 accredited degree programs online and more than 300 online courses. In the past three years its online enrollment has increased by almost 500 percent.

The San Diego-based University caters primarily to working adult learners. Its one-course-per-month format allows employees on the management track to pursue a college degree at an accelerated pace while working full-time.

National University's accessible format attracts one of the most diverse student bodies in U.S. higher education. It ranks first in California in conferring master's degrees to Hispanics, and ranks first nationally in granting master's degrees in computer & information science to Hispanics.

According to the 2003 Sloan Survey of Online Learning, a majority of institutes of higher education (57 percent) concur that online learning is just as good as traditional, face-to-face classroom instruction. The survey also reports that nearly three out of four academic leaders say learning online may be better than traditional classroom learning within the next three years. Some additional findings:

  • Eighty-one percent of all institutions of higher education offer at least one fully online or blended course.
  • Complete online degree programs are offered by 34 percent of the institutions.
  • When asked about the role of online education for the future of their institution, 67 percent of survey respondents answered that it is a critical long-term strategy for their institution.
