Personal Information
I put myself through nursing school by running a horse stable in Kansas, and when I graduated, I began my nursing career working in the Surgical ICU Unit at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. I then took a temporary job in the Surgical ICU at Lakeside Hospital of Case Western Reserve University Hospital system while waiting to get accepted into a graduate program. I was accepted into the PhD program at the University of Michigan post baccalaureate, but did decide to pick up my Master’s degree along the way. My dissertation examined the costs and staffing outcomes of four nurse staffing plans using computer simulation modeling with the GPSS/H computer programming language. I served as Director of Finance of a large hospital, and as Director of Nursing before leaving the hospital setting to pursue an academic career. I have worked and taught in the fields of Informatics, Nursing Administration, and Statistics and Data Analysis. I love seeing students grow in their knowledge and love for nursing.
My personal interests include biking with my husband along the lovely California coast bicycle trails, gardening, and caring for animals of all sorts, from birds to cats and dogs, to horses and sheep. I love taking boat rides to Catalina Island and the Channel Islands (or anywhere else!) with my husband and two sons.
