Executive Vice President & Chief Diversity Executive
George A. Ramirez is Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Executive, whose mission is to broaden the diversity of the company’s senior management and executive ranks. Mr. Ramirez, who was named to the newly created position in March 2012, reports to Union Bank President and Chief Executive Officer Masashi Oka.
In addition to working with executive leadership and members of the UnionBanCal Corporation Board of Directors – one of the most diverse corporate boards of any major U.S. company – Mr. Ramirez collaborates closely with key areas such as Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, Diversity & Inclusion, and Training & Development.
Mr. Ramirez, who joined Union Bank in 1986 as a Financial Services Officer, has more than 30 years of banking experience and has served in various executive, line management and staff roles. In 2010, he was appointed to lead the effort to integrate the former Tamalpais Bank and former Frontier Bank into Union Bank. Before successfully leading the integration of these two institutions, Ramirez led Union Bank’s Priority Banking® program, which provides specialized services to affluent consumers and entrepreneurs across more than 100 Priority Banking Offices throughout California, Washington and Oregon.
Mr. Ramirez was Senior Vice President and Market President from 2000 through 2008. He led a division of more than 120 branches in Orange, Los Angeles, and Ventura counties, overseeing 1,400 employees. He was responsible for all aspects of retail branch operations for consumer, high net-worth and small business customers who included accountability for profitability, business development, sales, operations, risk management, employee development, and corporate social responsibility.
Mr. Ramirez was also responsible for developing and managing the bank’s Diverse Markets Administration in 1997. In that assignment he created and directed the first multicultural markets group, focusing on advertising, marketing, and business development for the Hispanic, African-American, Women, and Asian markets in California, Oregon, and Washington.
Mr. Ramirez has served on numerous boards of directors for civic and charitable organizations, and he speaks frequently at banking, leadership, and diversity conferences. He serves, or has served, and holds honorary board positions for the following organizations: The Pat Brown Public Policy Institute and the UC San Diego Student-Run Free Clinic Project. He was chairman of the Southern California Junior Achievement Latino Initiative and was an executive board member for the Tomás Rivera Public Policy Institute. In addition, he is immediate-past Chairman for the White Memorial Medical Center Foundation in Los Angeles and is a member of the hospital’s Governing Board.
Mr. Ramirez attended Grossmont College and San Diego State University. He is a graduate of LEAD San Diego, as well as Pacific Coast Executive Banking School at the University of Washington, and the Executive Development Program in Strategy & Organization at Stanford University. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.
