U.S. Latino Literature
Course Description
Examination of important representative works by U.S. Latino writers and theoretical approaches relevant to studying that literature. Emphases may vary in different sections.
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss the work of important representative U.S. Latino writers.
- Discuss the development of U.S. Latino literature in relation to developments in American history, culture, and literature.
- Compare and contrast the diversity of themes and textual strategies of different works by these writers.
- Apply relevant theoretical and critical approaches to the analysis of works studied in the course.
- Construct clear and well-made analytical arguments about these works in writing and discussion.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements: Substantial readings from a variety of important and representative U.S. Latino writers. Specific emphases may change from section to section. Some discussion of relevant critical theories must be included. 8-10 pages of formal writing requiring literary analysis of specific texts and incorporation of relevant critical sources. Final Exam composed primarily of essay questions on course readings. Written work from papers (formal) and exams (informal) should comprise at least 50% of the course grade.
