Course Description

A survey of important British authors and literary trends from Chaucer through the middle of the 18th century.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate, in both discussion and writing, familiarity with the important authors, movements, and genres of the period under study.
• Demonstrate, in both discussion and writing, the ability to analyze individual works within the context of their author’s oeuvre and development, and the literary and social contexts of their production.
• Demonstrate, in both discussion and writing, the ability to identify characteristics of the work of particular authors, movements, and periods, and to compare works written by different authors and in different periods.
• Demonstrate, in both discussion and writing, the ability to perform ‘close readings’ of individual works based on their formal qualities, incorporating relevant literary and critical terminology.
