|Course Description: This course covers the theories, etiology, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of addictive and compulsive disorders from the resiliency, recovery, and medical models. This course also addresses the impact of SES, ethnicity, other environmnetal factors and contemporary controversies on the development and treatment of addictive disorders.
|Course Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze the various theories of etiology and models of addictive and compulsive disorders.
- Analyze the behavorial effects of the different classes of drugs.
- Distinguish between the different diagnositic categories related to addictive and compulsive disorders.
- Assess clients and formulate a differential DSM diagnosis of specific addictive and compulsive disorders.
- Formulate a case conceptualization from the resiliency, recovery, medical, or other models of assessment and treatment.
- Formulate treatment plans for clients with addictive and/or compulsive disorders.
- Apply at least three evidence-based therapeutic approaches appropriate for clients with addictive and/or compulsive disorders.
- Analyze the implications of public health and legal approaches to chemical dependency for mental health interventions for addictions.
- Integrate knowledge of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the treatment of clients with addictive and/or compulsive disorders.

- Analyze core psychological concepts that underpin counseling, psychotherapy, and mental health counseling.
- Apply a working knowledge of a range of topics important to mental health practice including (but not limited to) psychopharmacology, addictive and compulsive disorders, structured psychological assessment, relational violence, gender and sexuality, and trauma/crisis.
- Apply norms and principles of public mental health work including (but not limited to) case management, collaborative treatment, evidence-based practice, strength-based model, resiliency, and recovery-oriented care to work with clients.
- Apply related therapeutic interventions with diverse clients using a variety of psychotherapeutic models.
- Assess and diagnose psychological distress and/or impairment, mental disorders, and problems in living in diverse individuals and systems within various mental health settings.
- Critically evaluate the controversies and regions of theoretical uncertainty within the current systems of mental health care.
- Demonstrate ability to develop strategies for successful and ethical psychotherapeutic interventions with diverse client groups in various clinical contexts, including crisis intervention and case management assessment.
- Demonstrate core psychological concepts and therapeutic skills that underpin counseling, psychotherapy, and mental health counseling.
- Demonstrate knowledge of various models of psychotherapy, capacity to critically evaluate and assess their effectiveness, and execute psychotherapeutic interventions within diverse relationships.
- Demonstrate knowledge of various theories of personality development and ability to critically evaluate etiology and development of personality characteristics, noting relevant professional literature.
- Demonstrate mastery of the core competencies required of all helping relationships.
- Diagnose and assess categories of mental distress, psychopathology, and problems in living in diverse individuals, couple, families, and systems according to the current diagnostic systems.
