In support of the well-being of future generations, South Dakotan and entrepreneur T. Denny Sanford, one of the country's most generous philanthropists, is donating an unprecedented $100 million to the private, nonprofit National University System to make social emotional learning available to every child nationwide in the PreK-6 grades. The funding allows the System to dramatically expand the Sanford Harmony social emotional learning program, which is based on the vision of Mr. Sanford and offers a comprehensive toolkit of life-transforming lessons and strategies emphasizing diversity and inclusion; empathy and critical thinking; communication; problem-solving; and peer relationships.
Peter Seidler, General Partner of the San Diego Padres, will be the keynote speaker at the May 19 Southern California Commencement of National University. Seidler, a leader in the San Diego community whose philanthropic efforts focus on helping the most vulnerable segments of the homeless population, will address approximately 20,000 attendees including graduates, their families and guests at Petco Park, which is the home of the Padres.
With adult learners becoming a significant part of the nation’s higher education population, National University is pleased to announce the expansion of the National University Scholars Program that aims to recognize 100 students through a comprehensive scholarship and educational support program. The scholarship, offered by the private, nonprofit University, is now open to California community college transfer students, and it covers the cost of degree completion for qualifying students who agree to participate in the selective program’s co-curricular activities and leadership development component.
In recognition of exceptional PreK-12 teachers, National University joins the San Diego Padres in honoring San Diego County teachers as the presenting partner of the Padres’ Annual Teacher Appreciation Night at their May 11 game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Petco Park.

San Diego Police Department Dispatch Supervisor Danielle Schule, who in her capacity has worked to support public safety for the past 15 years, has been named the 2017 City of San Diego/National University Professional Development Scholarship recipient. When National University alumnus Brent Reel saw the magnitude of Hurricane Harvey—the wettest tropical cyclone in U.S. history, dumping more than 40 inches of rain on eastern Texas—he knew he had to help. Reel (BSN, 2016), a senior clinical nurse consultant for Cardinal Health, used his own vacation time and frequent flyer miles to get to Houston where he volunteered four days as a disaster relief nurse.

One of the country’s largest school districts, Los Angeles Unified School District, is expanding a research-based social emotional learning program, Sanford Harmony, this 2017-2018 school year following its initial introduction to the District’s early childhood centers. The Sanford Harmony program promotes positive peer interactions and relationships among students through easily-integrated lesson plans and activities that emphasize communication, empathy, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving skills.
