Course Description

This course prepares teachers, service providers and community mental health professionals to apply developmental theories and research to the understanding of social learning and behavior challenges of children and adolescents. The course focuses on the developmental process and addresses differences between normal development and developmental differences from early childhood/preschool through adolescence and young adulthood.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of theoretical perspectives of child and adolescent development.
  • Apply research to the understanding of social learning and behavioral challenges of children and adolescents.
  • Demonstrate understanding developmental norms and processes of growth and change in children and adolescents and distinguish behaviors that are part of normal development from those that are different from normal development.
  • Identify developmental histories and family lifestyles to determine their impact on the functioning of children and adolescents in families.
  • Synthesize understanding or diversity, multiculturalism and cultural differences as they relate to the development of children and adolescents in families.
