The Individual and Society

Course Description

About social interaction: the behavior and cognitive processes that occur in groups. Students consider the individual as social actor and the development of self image or identity and the socialization process. Students analyze group interactions including conformity, productivity, and leadership. The course examines links between the individual and society.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and assess key theorists and their work in the area of social psychology.
  • Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the two predominant paradigms in social psychology: symbolic interactionism and social constructivism.
  • Analyze the processes involved in everyday social encounters and social relationships.
  • Evaluate the relevance of these same processes to the development of their own identities and world views.
  • Draw distinctions between sociological and psychological approaches to the field of social psychology.
