Cultural Diversity

Course Description

Examines race, gender, ethnicity and class in 20th century American society. Introduces students to methods for studying the changing nature of our society and explores ways in which our increasingly urbanized and technological culture affects all aspects of professional and unskilled work. May involve work in oral history.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural diversity of the United States.
  • Analyze current issues relating to cultural diversity within the context of historical patterns or racism, sexism, and class conflict in the United States.
  • Discuss and interpret the history of protest movements surrounding issues of race, class, and gender.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the legal, political, and economic mechanisms that have restricted access to important elements of American citizenship and life.
  • Effectively communicate major themes of the course in both written work and an in-class presentation.
