World Civilizations II

Course Description

Discusses how the cultures, economies, and societies of the world developed since 1500 C.E. Explores issues of class and class conflict, personal and cultural identity, race, work, industrial development, colonialism, ecology, and political and economic life pertaining to the history of civilizations in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe.

Learning Outcomes

  • Present the early-modern European and Chinese conceptions of the self.
  • Analyze the role of racial slavery in engendering racial prejudice in the Americas.
  • Clarify the importance of class to the development of modern political theory.
  • Explain the origins of capitalism, the industrial revolution, and socialism in Europe.
  • Assess 19th-century European imperialism in China, India, and Africa.
  • Illustrate the differences in Chinese and Indian nationalism in the 20th century.
  • Evaluate the link between capitalism and ecology in Africa and the U.S. since 1945.
  • Explain three major political, economic, or social changes which have occurred in the world since 1980.
