Individual Counseling I

Course Description

Focus on the major theories and techniques of substance abuse counseling. Emphasis will be on strategies related to assisting clients in accepting the diagnosis of substance abuse and the early stages of recovery. Considerations for working with special populations will be discussed. Students will use case studies to apply techniques.

  • Identify the major counseling techniques designed to assist clients in accepting the diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence.
  • Discuss and apply the use of counseling techniques designed to assist clients in accepting the diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence.
  • Identify the major counseling techniques used to assist clients in early substance abuse recovery.
  • Discuss and apply the use of counseling techniques used to assist clients in early substance abuse recovery.
  • Identify strategies for working with special populations to include ethnic background, women, adolescents, sexual orientation, and clients with HIV/AIDS.
