Two-month fiction workshop focused on writing in one or more genres of fiction, such as Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Thriller, and Romance, among others. Genres selected by instructor. Students will write their own original genre texts for critique, explore genre-specific conventions, and read extensively in the genre.
- Compose original works of genre fiction.
- Assess conventions of genre and craft in published genre writing.
- Critique and offer constructive feedback to writing of peers.
- Appraise history of genre writing and major authors.
- Classify genre distinctions in published work.
Students will complete weekly workshops where they submit their own original writing for critique or if they are not submitting that week, critique the work of others. Students will read extensively in the chosen genre and discuss the history of the genre, craft principles, and conventions in genre writing. Students will complete writing exercises meant to teach craft principles in the chosen genre. The students will turn in a final revision portfolio of their work at the end of the class.
