Course Description

Considers the significant influence that individual and collective behavior exerts on health status. Relationships of behavior and social variables are examined, including natural and built environments, economics, and public policy.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify historical and contemporary constructs of health and disease.
  • Describe behaviors which promote, maintain and protect health in the absence of risk.
  • Determine the behavioral dimensions of major acute and chronic diseases and conditions.
  • Differentiate among health education and promotion theories and models form an individual, family, and community perspective.
  • Compare and contrast essential elements of healthy risk, illness, and sickness behaviors.
  • Explain how environment and policy affect health behavior.
  • Describe the health behavior influences of social processes at home and in the school and community.
