Law and Ethics
This course explores the ethical and legal issues related to substance abuse counseling. Topics include laws related to confidentiality, mandated reporting, scope of practice, informed consent, and record keeping as well as ethical systems and standards. Students will practice the application of standards in a case study format.
- Discuss and apply concepts of confidentiality, informed consent, and record keeping.
- Discuss and apply legal requirements related to mandated reporting and violation of confidentiality.
- Identify scope of practice issues and discuss when to refer a client to another licensed professional.
- Identify and discuss ethical standards of the alcohol and drug abuse counselor profession.
