Developmental Psychopathology
Course Description
Addresses emotional and behavior pathology most likely to be encountered by school psychologists and school counselors working in school settings. It examines human development, and the biological, psychosocial, and cultural variables in the etiology of these disorders. Students will become familiar with characteristics, classification, assessment and diagnosis of such disorders, as well as developmental theories and stages of human development.
Learning Outcomes
- Examine the basic principles of diagnosing and classifying emotional, developmental, and behavioral disorders encountered in school settings.
- Evaluate the various information from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) with information from the California Education Code (Ed Code) as it pertains to various diagnoses.
- Analyze the biological, psycho-social and cultural systems and their ability to influence development, behavior, learning and psychopathology.
- Appraise the major developmental theories and stages of development, and the impact these stages have on behavior and learning in the school settings.
