Cybersecurity for Small Businesses and Nonprofit Organizations

Tips and resources provided by industry experts and faculty of National University’s federally-recognized cybersecurity program at Nov. 4 event in San Diego; Attendees offered chance to participate in a free cybersecurity audit

National University is hosting a cybersecurity seminar on Nov. 4 in San Diego with a special focus on helping nonprofits and small businesses learn more about strategies and resources to protect themselves against potential cyberattacks. The event, offered at no cost, will feature industry experts as well as faculty from National University’s cybersecurity program – the first and only one in San Diego County to achieve prestigious recognition from the NSA/DHS federal security agencies.

As an added bonus, nonprofit and small-business guests will be able to schedule a free cybersecurity audit by students who are part of the University’s program. As a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, National University’s cybersecurity program, which is part of the School of Engineering and Computing, is recognized as meeting the highest standards for cybersecurity education set by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security.

On the agenda for the November 4 symposium:

Among the highlights of the seminar will be demonstrations on a large video screen of a simulated phishing attack and how to prevent it. National University cybersecurity faculty and students will also share tips and insight into the cybersecurity audit process offered by National University’s program. For their capstone projects, students in the University’s Master of Science in Cyber Security program, which is part of the School of Computing and Engineering, develop comprehensive cybersecurity assessments for small businesses in their communities.

Featured speakers include:

Chris Simpson oversees National University’s Cyber Security program, which has been recognized nationally for its leadership in cyber defense education. Mr. Simpson, who has also served as President of the San Diego Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association, provides training at National University in threat mitigation, pen testing and attack methods, wireless and mobile security and net defense tactics.  Mr. Simpson, who retired from the U.S. Navy in October 2009 after 27 years of service, has extensive experience as an Information Assurance Manager, including a tour as the Information Assurance Manager (IAM) for Commander, Combined Forces Command Afghanistan.

Rusty Sailors serves as the Chairman/CEO of LP3-SecurIT, a company that focuses on delivering secure IT solutions to small- and medium-sized businesses. Mr. Sailors has over 40 years of experience in defense and intelligence, and contributes his expertise through various organizations, including National University’s Engineering Advisory Board; the Executive Board of Infragard, the partnership between the FBI and industry, helping to protect industrial capabilities and critical infrastructure; and as Chairman of Protecting Tomorrow, a non-profit organization focused on protecting tomorrow’s generations, communities and technologies by educating the community and driving security into solutions from I-2-I (Inception to Implementation).
