National University calls for entries for 11th Annual Young Writers Competition in Fresno
March 28, 2008Fresno, Calif. – National University is soliciting students from Fresno-area schools to submit poetry for its 11th Annual Young Writers Competition. This year's theme is "Survival: A Message of Hope and Encouragement." The deadline for submission is Friday, April 25.
Writers will be ranked in three categories, including 4th - 6th graders, 7th and 8th graders, and 9th - 12th graders. The judges this year will accept poetry of all lengths. Entries are limited to one per student. All participants will be awarded a certificate for entering the competition, and cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners. All participants will receive award certificates. An award presentation is scheduled for Friday, May 16.
Interested writers should submit poetry based on a person's or group's surviving a major crisis, such as the Holocaust, war, slavery, or disease. The poetry can also be about the writer's survival of circumstances related to illness, family relationships, and other personal crises, or words of inspiration dedicated to others who have experienced any of these hardships. A select group of the contestants will be invited to meet Mr. Leon Leyson, the youngest survivor from Schindler's List during the Jewish Holocaust, who will be in Fresno on May 6.
Best-selling science fiction author Dr. Howard Hendrix, a former faculty member at National University, was instrumental in establishing the Young Writers Competition in 1998. Since then, the event has served as a showcase for literary talent in elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools throughout the Fresno area.
Entry forms are available at National University's Fresno Campus. Teachers should forward student entries to National University, with a registration form attached, no later than April 25.
