Course Description:

Examines the role and nature of schools in the United States through an exploration of a range of cultural, philosophical, historical, legal, political, and ethical perspective.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Analyze and interpret the educational issues and professional practices that promote self-directed reflective learners.
  • Examine the implications of political, economic, social, and technological trends and their potential impact on public schools.
  • Analyze the role of historical educational practices, major historical events that influenced education during their lifetime, and their relationship to contemporary educational policy trends in education, educational reform and school improvement and instructional strategies.
  • Discuss the role of philosophy in the work of a teacher and examine the underlying beliefs and values of the philosophical perspectives of idealism, pragmatism, existentialism, and cultural ways of knowing for the purpose of articulating their own philosophy of education.
  • Interpret the responsibilities, ethical expectations, and professional commitments expected of a teacher.
  • Articulate how curriculum effects the transfer of knowledge.
  • Discuss the effects of educational inequality on student achievement.
  • Discuss the historical context of American education and their relationship to present trends in education, educational reform and school improvement.
  • Understand the implications of federal legislation's impact on state and local curriculum decisions for k-12 students.
  • Evaluate the legal roles and responsibilities of the federal and state governments in defining the rights and responsibilities of members of the overall education community.
  • Analyze the organizational structure of the educational system to include the roles and responsibilities of state and local school boards and their involvement in shaping educational program for all K-12 students, including culturally and linguistically diverse students, and students with special needs.

Writing Across the Curriculum:
Students are expected to demonstrate writing skills in describing, analyzing and evaluating ideas and experiences. Written reports and research papers must follow specific standards regarding citations of an author's work within the text and references at the end of the paper. Students are encouraged to use the services of the University's Writing Center when preparing materials.

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the presentation of someone else's ideas or work as one's own. Students must give credit for any information that is not either the result of original research or common knowledge. If a student borrows ideas or information from another author, he/she must acknowledge the author in the body of the text and on the reference page. Ethics:
Ethical behavior in the classroom is required of every student. The course will identify ethical policies and practices relevant to course topics.

Technology:
Students are expected to be competent in using current technology appropriate for this discipline. Such technology may include word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Use of the internet and e-mail may also be required.

Diversity:
Learning to work with and value diversity is essential in every class. Students are expected to exhibit an appreciation for multinational and gender diversity in the classroom.

Civility:
As a diverse community of learners, students must strive to work together in a setting of civility, tolerance, and respect for each other and for the instructor. Rules of classroom behavior (which apply to online as well as onsite courses) include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conflicting opinions among members of a class are to be respected and responded to in a professional manner.
