Course Description: Examines the underlying theoretical principles of developmentally appropriate practices as they apply to Early Childhood Education programs/environments. Emphasis is on the key role of adult-child interactions and teaching strategies that support the development of all children. A review of the history of ECE and how, over time, it has evolved to include professional practices, advocacy, ethics and professional identity is included.
Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify the underlying theoretical perspectives of developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Demonstrate understanding of best and promising early childhood teaching practices across delivery systems, program types, philosophy and relationships/ethics.
  • Assess an early childhood education setting utilizing indicators of best practices that support ALL children including those with diverse characteristics and families.
  • Analyze the relationships between planning, delivery, observation and assessment in developing effective teaching strategies that foster learning and development.

    • Apply an interweaving of theory and practice into a child-centered curriculum which shows competence in selection of teaching strategies designed to create diverse developmentally appropriate, safe, learning environments.

    • Demonstrate developmentally, linguistically, and culturally appropriate child-centered lessons, including cognitive, language, social, emotional and physical dimensions.

Writing Across the Curriculum:
Students are expected to demonstrate writing skills in describing, analyzing and evaluating ideas and experiences. Written reports and research papers must follow specific standards regarding citations of an author's work within the text and references at the end of the paper. Students are encouraged to use the services of the University's Writing Center when preparing materials.

Ethical behavior in the classroom is required of every student. The course will identify ethical policies and practices relevant to course topics.

Students are expected to be competent in using current technology appropriate for this discipline. Such technology may include word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Use of the internet and e-mail may also be required.
