EXC650 Consultation and Collaboration
Course Description
A discussion of the spectrum of interpersonal and interactive learning skills required of the special education teacher. Emphasizes counseling with parents to enhance the parent-professional partnership. Stresses the sharing of knowledge and mutual efforts between professionals and parents to meet the special needs of exceptional students.
Learning Outcomes
- Develop an understanding of the special education teacher's role in facilitating communication between parents and families, students with special needs, and other professionals and paraprofessionals serving students with special needs.
- Develop an awareness of the skills needed by the special educator in collaborative, consultative and teaming situations.
- Explore the background of the structures and functions of all families and particularly families of exceptional children and youth.
- Develop strategies for identifying strengths and needs of the family and school teams working with special needs students.
- Empowerment of parents, teachers and other school professionals to work effectively with others.
- Develop strategies to deal with various groups of special needs students in terms of coordinated services.
- Demonstrate techniques and skills that are effective for conferencing with exceptional students, their families, and other professionals and paraprofessionals serving students with special needs.
