EXC615A Fld Study: Technology

Course Description

Practical field activities designed to promote and supplement the course goals and outcomes of EXC 615. Students are encouraged to take the field study concurrently with EXC 615. Grading is S or U only.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the issues and trends associated with assistive technology service delivery.
  • Explain how microcomputer system components provide a functional foundation on how computer systems work and how they affect assistive technology solutions.
  • Discuss postural problems and potential solutions related to positioning in a wheelchair and accessing assistive technology.
  • Describe a variety of power mobility systems, including issues associated with bus transportation.
  • Compare and contrast a variety of augmentative and alternative communication processes and interventions.
  • Design an augmentative communication device for a disabled person.
  • Invent an assistive device which can aid a disabled person.
  • Describe how adaptive devices and keyboard adaptations can be utilized to compensate for deficits in the areas of cognition, vision, hearing, speech and language, social and motor skills.
  • Describe strategies for adapting play materials for the disabled.
  • Discuss ways the disabled can successfully integrate assistive technology in the home and in the community.
  • State the key provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and technology provisions related to that legislation.
  • State the key provisions of the American with Disabilities Act and describe how technology can empower the disabled in the workplace.
  • Develop a Technology Integration Plan for a disabled person.
  • Describe how the integrating technologies of multimedia, networks, and telecommunications can empower disabled persons.
