DHH615 Bilingual & Multicultural Ed.
Course Description
During this one month course, theories regarding multiculturalism and multilingualism will be explored, analyzed and synthesized to gain insights of what might inform an equitable teaching environment. An anthropological definition will be used to interpret culture through a variety of identities to which Deaf people relate. Lesson plans will be analyzed and created using culturally responsive pedagogies.
Learning Outcomes
- describe the diversity that exists within ASL-English communities in the United States.
- identify, describe and evaluate main concepts within current literature on multilingualism and multicultural education of learners who are ASL-English users.
- integrate and apply ways of managing diverse values and beliefs among individuals, educators, families and other groups affecting the education of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
- examine principles of educational equity and identify methods of integrating multicultural and culturally responsive perspectives to make schools, classrooms and pedagogy suitable for diverse learners who are deaf and hearing.
- provide evidence of their reflection upon their teaching experience and synthesis of their new understandings as teachers of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
- examine the cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity at a school that serves DHH students and report on the findings.
