Course Description

Analysis of social and political forces impacting human resources leadership and school-community relations. Internal and external components of operation of personnel and school management functions. Needs of diverse communities cultural Pluralism, personnel issues, and personnel and community relationships related to state and federal laws and local policies. Collective bargaining’s impact on human resources and community relationships.

Learning Outcomes

  • A sensitivity to cultural pluralism, economic and social diversity, and the demographics which affect human resource management and school-community relations.
  • Examine and evaluate attitudes towards people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Manage services for students according to student needs with a sensitivity to diversity and to appropriate support personnel.
  • Build awareness of the school as a community, integrating approaches to providing services to children and families.
  • Use success-oriented and ethically-based recruitment, interview, assignment and induction approaches for employment, evaluation, support for and retention of school personnel.
  • Practice recommended procedures for documentation and personnel file building regarding employee discipline and termination.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of administration and union roles in collective bargaining and contract management.
  • Apply practical knowledge of collaborative strategies and methods of achieving effective school-community relations.
  • Implement educational change by mobilizing community support with consideration of special interest groups, and by fostering intra-agency and inter-disciplinary cooperation.
  • Construct an effective school public relations program.
