POL320 Politics of Social Movements

Course Description

Introduction to social movements and political action, covering several theoretical perspectives on how to understand and analyze social movements in recent global history, from their origins to their demise; a global survey of the processes of social and political awareness, mobilization and development of such movements.

Learning Outcomes

  • Acquire the vocabulary for describing and discussing theories of social conflict, political change, social movements, social change and revolution.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with a diverse number of cultures and their social and political arrangements.
  • Write a substantive analytic essay using theoretical frameworks, to identify and critique the similarities and differences, as well as the causes and consequences of social and political discontent within a diversity of multicultural societies.
  • Acquire research skills for completing research into a social movement of their choice (approved by the instructor).
