|Course Description: Analyzes the history, growth, and future development of global communications and information systems. Examines the technological, social, political and economic forces impacting the development and spread of electronic communications and information technology in local, regional and global contexts
around the world.
|Course Learning Outcomes:
- Clarify the interrelationship between communications and information technology and societal development.
- Describe the current state of global communications and information technology and regional differences in the application of the technologies.
- Define and discuss the political process that impacts the growth and utilization of communications and information technology.
- Evaluate the economic costs incurred and the benefits being realized from communications and information technology for societies, countries, regions, and continents.
- Utilize global communications and information technologies to conduct professional and business-related research.
- Describe the role of providers of communication and information technology in the development of global network and growth of local economies.
- Analyze the role and impact of the United Nations and the World Bank in the development of local and global communications and information infrastructures.
- Evaluate the impact of national governmental regulatory policies on the development of local and global communications and information infrastructure.
- Assess economic growth in specific countries that has resulted from the construction of communications and information infrastructures.
- Assess the major theories on the relationship between access to communications and information and upward mobility of individuals and classes of society.

Plagiarism is the presentation of someone else's ideas or work as one's own. Students must give credit for any information that is not either the result of original research or common knowledge. Ethical behavior in the classroom is required of every student. The course will identify ethical policies and practices relevant to course topics.
Students are expected to be competent in using current technology appropriate for this discipline. Such technology may include word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Use of the internet and e-mail may also be required.
