Course Description: An overview of the distribution and uses of world natural resources and the application of economic concepts to the management of specific renewable resources. Examines specific resources such as soil, water, grasslands, forests, marine habitats, fish and game populations and energy resources.
Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable resources, the different management strategies required for each and the economic perspectives of natural resource use.
  • Describe and provide an analysis of current issues confronting the management and economics of specific resources such as: forests, range lands, riparian habitats, fisheries, game populations, water resources, soils, energy resources, parks and wilderness areas.
  • Apply principles of economics to identify the causes, consequences and ways of dealing with natural resource problems, including but not limited to: a. Defining economic efficiency as a tool for evaluating natural resource use and policy; b. Analyzing sources of inefficiency and constructing policy options to reduce inefficiency; and c. Applying economic concepts to the management of specific resource classes/categories.
  • Formulate a "conservation alternative" or natural resources policy, based on sound conservation and economic principles, to manage and enhance global natural resources.

  • MAJOR IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
    • Apply state of the art scientific and environmental concepts to solve environmental problems.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of natural resource policy, environmental regulations, and resource management.
    • Examine individual impacts on global resources and the patterns of unequal distribution of such resources.
    • Recognize the important effects of political, economical, social, and educational forces on environmental protection.
    • Recognize the link between healthy ecosystems and healthy human populations.
    • Recognize the major components of the earth's systems and how they function.
