BIO405A Cell and Molecular Biology Lab
Lead Faculty: Dr. Huda Makhluf
Course Description
This laboratory course will complement the student's knowledge of cell and molecular biology with demonstrations and experiments. Contact hours for this laboratory course (45) are based on a 3:1 ratio, i.e. 3 lab hours = 1 lecture hour equivalent.
Learning Outcomes
- Be able to establish microbial pure cultures by using aseptic transfer and the streak technique.
- Prepare culture media, cell cultures and extracts.
- Be able to isolate plasmid DNA from Escherichia coli by using the mini-prep technique.
- Utilize a spectrophotometer to quantify DNA, and analyze restriction digestion on agarose gel electrophoresis.
- Describe polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and amplify LacZ gene fragments by PCR.
- Be able to purify and quantify proteins, and to perform western blotting using ?- galactosidase antibodies
