LUS101 Introductory Luiseño 2

Course Description
Builds upon the Luiseño vocabulary and grammar of LUS 100 and LUS 100A. The present tense and command forms of verbs will be explained. Noun declension in the nominative and accusative cases will be elucidated. The intricacies of the five Luiseño verbs of location will be discussed and explicated.
Learning Outcomes
- Converse using command forms, positive and negative, second person singular and plural, and first plural of regular intransitive and transitive verbs
- Speak correctly in Luiseño, using the present tense, positive and negative, singular and plural, of regular transitive and intransitive verbs, including transitive verbs suffixing –i, intransitive verbs suffixing –a, Type A verbs, and verbs ending in a consonant or vowel other than i or a
- Use in conversation and in written passages the 500 word vocabulary as introduced in the course
- Identify all six nominal suffixes
- Converse using the singular and plural, nominative and accusative forms of regular animate and inanimate nouns, with mastery of the declension of select essential irregular nouns
- Translate from English to Luiseño and from Luiseño to English, using all demonstrative and personal pronouns, singular and plural, animate and inanimate
- Form present-tense verbless equative sentences for all persons, singular and plural, and for all nouns, animate, and inanimate, singular and plural
- Formulate syntactic agreement between adjectives and head nouns
- Use correct syntax involving adjective/noun word order
- Recognize and use pronominal clitics for present tense
- Conjugate and use with correct syntax and morphology all five verbs of location in the present tense
- Decline select inanimate nouns in the locative case
- Correctly apply Luiseño possessive prefixes to nouns (inalienably possessed nouns, optionally possessed nouns, nouns which may not be possessed)
- Express possession (corresponding to the English verb 'to have') using verbs of location and possessed nouns (My mother is located there=I have a mother)
