Course Description
An introduction to Luiseño for those with no previous experience. This course stresses the acquisition of basic vocabulary centering on artistic expression. Students will learn how to describe a work of art entirely in Luiseño. Instructional emphasis will then focus on pronunciation, orthography, and syllabification.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe a work of art in Luiseño (requiring acquisition of 200 word minimum vocabulary)
- Give basic drawing instructions in Luiseño (requiring the correct use of two transitive verbs in the command form, plus mastery of the accusative and instrumental cases, as these apply to color and size adjectives)
- Transliterate Luiseño words written in the standardized orthography into the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) as it applies to Luiseño, and vice versa
- Distinguish between and accurately reproduce orally and in writing Luiseño short and long vowels and consonants
- Correctly apply and identify the rules governing Luiseño syllabification
- Distinguish between and accurately reproduce diphthongs orally and in writing
- Correctly apply and identify the rules governing Luiseño hyphenation
- Represent in writing any Luiseño word, following all orthographic conventions of the language, including minor spelling exceptions
- Syllabify any Luiseño word, including such exceptions as foreign loan words
