Course Description

An examination of various trends in nineteenth century literature, including Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, and Symbolism.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the paradigms of different national, ethnic, and class literatures.
  • Identify differences in approach to literary traditions.
  • Identify literary perspectives and prejudices.
  • Understand how and where various literary genres arose.
  • Understand non-Western literary and aesthetic values in the context of similarity and difference to Western values.
