LIT315 Arabic Lit in Translation

Course Description

A survey of prominent authors from the Arabic speaking world in English translation. A selection of poems, short stories, novels, and plays will be treated. Attention will be given to social, intellectual, and political context out of which these works have arisen.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand how literature can serve as a window to other cultures.
  • Know how to apply processes of close reading and different critical approaches to the analysis of stories from different traditions and perspectives.
  • Improve their oral and written interpretive skills.
  • Understand traditional literary terminologies and applications.
