Course Description

Within the field of Applied Linguistics, this course covers fundamental concepts of research design and statistics, and the principal considerations involved in conducting quantitative and qualitative research including: methods, data collection and analyses, and ethics and style in research reporting. Discussions of these issues focus on individual research projects conducted by students.

Learning Outcomes

  • Have a basic understanding of Research Methods in Applied Linguistics.
  • Use their gained understanding of Research Methods in Applied Linguistics, to develop activities for research/teaching second/foreign languages.
  • Critically analyze approaches and methods in research on applied linguistics.
  • Survey traditional and innovative approaches in research in applied linguistics.
  • Evaluate current materials for teaching approaches to applied linguistics from primary and secondary sources in the field.
  • Conduct research in areas of applied linguistics; and the intersection of the areas of second language acquisition.
  • Have a basic understanding of Research Methods in Applied Linguistics.
