ALN 600 English Phonology/Phonetics

Course Description

An overview of the phonetic and phonological features of American English, which relate to the teaching of English as a second/foreign language. In addition to an understanding of the English sound system, students will gain skills in developing activities for teaching pronunciation and evaluate current materials for teaching pronunciation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Use the overview of phonetic and phonological features of American English re teaching of English as a second/foreign language.
  • Use their gained understanding of the English sound system, to develop activities for teaching pronunciation
  • Evaluate current materials for teaching pronunciation.
  • Conduct research in areas of phonetics, phonology, teaching of consonants, vowels and supra-segmental features of English; and the intersection of pronunciation with the areas of listening, grammar and orthography.
