Can a bachelor's degree in business administration lead to pop music stardom?
It did for Nikki Geasland, also known as Nikki Nova, lead vocalist for San Diego-based Liquid Blue, an internationally acclaimed pop music band. If you haven't heard of Liquid Blue yet, give it some time.
This past January, Ms. Nova and her band members graced the cover of New Music Weekly. It's not quite the cover of Rolling Stone, but the weekly recording industry magazine has become a standard source for tracking radio airplay nationwide.
"Real", the first radio single from the band's latest CD, Supernova, has reached its highest chart position to date. As of March 4, 2005, the song was ranked as the "#1 Hot A/C (adult contemporary) track in the nation amongst indie label artists."
In 2004, Nikki's band was voted "Hottest Contemporary Act" at the National Music Awards and six of their singles reached number one on the Independent Music Charts. Liquid Blue's music has been described as "an exotic fusion of western pop melodies with ancient and modern eastern elements," and the band has a growing following overseas.
Liquid Blue recently secured a distribution contract with Shanghai Audio & Video Publishing Corporation, the largest publishing house in The People's Republic of China. Nikki and her band mates are the first act from the United States to be signed by a Chinese company, and their album will soon be distributed to the world's most populous country.
If you are in the U.S. military, you may have heard of Liquid Blue. Over the past three years, they have performed at USO Shows for troops deployed in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
On Liquid Blue's website, Nikki notes that she graduated from National University in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. The University's flexible format permitted the rising pop star to join the ban while she was still studying for her degree.
